	The Del Mar race is a two day event. The raceway itself is set on a 1.6 mile, 11 turn temporary circuit located within the Del Mar Fairgrounds, in California. Steve raced his 1600 Super Porsche there in 1959, winning the event. On another occasion at Del Mar in 1959, this time racing a Lotus, he did not fare so well, as he explained to writer William Nolan: "I was leading with the Lotus when I accidentally hit this switch on the dash which cut my power. It was an emergency fuel switch for changing tanks. As a result, the car just died on me. I was embarrassed about that, but I was still learning. Each time you race you learn more."
