PASSION & POETRY - THE BALLAD OF SAM PECKINPAH

Postby mike siegel » Mon Mar 23, 2009 12:02 am

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum, just wanted to say hello!
'should have discovered this site much earlier, but the lack of time and the 5 other forums I'm with probably held me
back from researching more on my favorite actor in the web.
I'm working a lot on Sam Peckinpahs legacy, therefore McQueen is included in some of my projects as well. Maybe
some of you have the Cinema Retro issue#3 with my Peckinpah - special (Getaway cover).
Right now I'm finishing my major project, the special edition DVD on my feature length Peckinpah documentary
PASSION & POETRY. The two - disc set will contain some 270 minutes of docs & featurettes.
For those who might care, I'd be happy to tell more about it.

Here's an older trailer at youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRvRqBaHdSg

Talking about Steve in my film are Ali MacGraw, Bo Hopkins, Katy Haber, Gordon Dawson.
The film plays next friday at the Ventura Film Festival, maybe somebody is there by coincidence..

Bedtime now...

Hey Mike

Looking forward to the doc on Peckinpah, do you have any kind of release date on it yet? Got any film festivals in mind? Got some of my favorite photos at El Dorado, including an 11x14 close up of Sam with his sunglasses on. So ~welcome to the forum, there's a whole crew of good people here! :hi:

Well, the festivals are more or less over.
It played in 2006 in Germany, England (Bradford), Italy, Israel and the US (Atlanta & New Mexico).

Took forever to make that film, basically because I did it all alone by myself - just too big for one guy such a project.

Nevertheless the German 2 - Disc Edition is in the making right now. That is I started in January and the release
will be May :). So much work. Here's the content:

It will be available from Amazon.de (links will be available on my website http://www.eldoradofilm.com soon).
At this point I don’t know about UK / US DVD sales. Maybe some online / import shops will offer it.
The German DVD will be Codefree / Pal, english language with optional German subtitles. (Only the booklet is in German)

Disc 1:
PASSION & POETRY - THE BALLAD OF SAM PECKINPAH 115 min.
(audio - commentary by me in German & English language)

Disc 2:
STORIES ON A STORYTELLER three part documentary with additional interviews
- Pt1: THE WESTERNER 29 min.
- Pt2: ART & SUCCESS 36 min.
- Pt3: POET ON THE LOOSE 38 min.

MAPACHE TERRITORY 15 min.
Featurette on the WILD BUNCH locations in Mexico

ERNEST BORGNINE ON THE WILD BUNCH 15 min.
Interview featurette

WORKING FOR SAM 10 min.
Mike’s homemovies. Behind the scenes, Retrospectives & Festivals

If everything works out these weeks, it will go into print in late April. I’ll post definitive news here (and on my website)...

And thanks for buying at my shop!
As mentioned yesterday in the 'collectors' thread, I can make nice
8x10 stills for private collectors...

I hope I'll ever get that McQueen book of the ground I started years ago. My plan was the make
three books on Peckinpah, McQueen and Leone. All packed with rare stills.
I did the book on Peckinpah with 1050 pictures in it, but since then film projects kept me from
doing another book.
I was a bit dissapointed by the last two photobooks on Steve. They are nice and heavy and
not that expensive.. but although here and there they offer some really great and rare stills,
a lot of space is wasted with well-known pictures in lesser quality and also they partly use the same
stills in both books :(

Hello friends, fellow film makers and Peckinpah aficionados,

while the work on the film & featurettes for the 2 Disc Special Edition DVD for PASSION & POETRY
comes near to an end,
I uploaded the featurette MAPACHE TERRITORY on youtube.com as kind of an apetizer for the fans.

It is a 13 minute film on my stay in Mexico and the WILD BUNCH location, Mapache's Hacienda.

You'll find the featurette in two parts (8 + 5 minutes), just search PASSION POETRY MAPACHE

Got my DVD's today. Tired but happy I am. That was my Bataan Death March.
Nevertheless it came out great.
In case anybody cares for feature length docs... (of course there's stuff on Steve in there as well)

My film PASSION & POETRY is on Spanish TV next month, May 1st and 29th on TCM (Turner Classic Movies).

Today I received the sad news that Vadim Glowna passed away last night at a Berlin hospital. It was quite sudden. Over the last 10 years he had become a good friend. He smuggled me into the VIP areas of the Berlin Film Festival and wrote the foreword for my Peckinpah book. He loved my PASSION & POETRY projects and supported me quite a bit. Over the years he didn't do that many interviews but he gave me a great one which made it hard for me to chose some exerpts for PASSION & POETRY (the feature length film). But last year I was able to use the biggest part of that footage for the CROSS OF IRON blu-ray I co-produced and I'm glad he finally saw this landmark film restored and released with my 2 hours of supplements. For him the film was most important as it changed his life and he also became a film maker shortly afterwards.
I can't express my sad feelings, he will be missed forever.

It is Sam's 90th birthday today. Considering that he was unofficially blacklisted for over seven years, he only spent 15 years making feature films. What a remarkable impact his rather short career had and still has in film making. Of the 14 films that he made at least four to eight turned out to become classic masterpieces (depends on who you ask). The world will always remember his art. This year sees at least three new books on him published, a retrospective at Locarno Film Festival and my own PASSION & POETRY is on TV in France and Japan (released also on Blu-ray in Japan!), I also just helped co-producing the upcoming Kino Lorber US Blu-ray for CONVOY and my uncut interview with Senta Berger (PASSION & POETRY - SENTA & SAM) will also be released later this year. HAPPY BIRTHDAY SAM!
