Steve blandly recounted a "double-race afternoon" at Hi Vista when he competed in the Pacific West Coast Championship Scrambles: "There was this big pile-up in the fourth lap, and in avoiding the tangle I hit a tree, split my mouth open, and knocked some teeth loose. But I was okay. I got back into it and won. Then I entered a second event that same afternoon, ran it with my face all puffed and bandaged, and won that race, too!"
