	Penina Spiegel interviewed Neile McQueen Toffel (McQueen's first wife) for her bio The Untold Story of a Bad Boy in Hollywood, which was released the same year as Toffel's own autobiography My Husband, My Friend. Toffel presents her own, more personal story of life with Steve.
		Their bond was partly forged by similarly cruel childhoods. Wheras Steve survived in boys homes and on the streets, Toffel survived a Japanese prison camp in the Philippines during World War II. They were also both neglected by unstable mothers. Toffell became a successful dancer on Broadway before meeting and marrying Steve, and they had two children before their 16-year marriage ended in divorce. She tells of her life with Steve up until his death from cancer in 1980.
