On the 1st of March, 1970, racing in his Porsche 908, Steve entered and won the 17 lap 'Winter Sprint' at Phoenix International Raceway.

Steve in Pole Position The 'Winter Sprint' was a charity event, and all proceeds went to 'The Arizona Boy's Ranch'.

Steve set a new lap record, coming in at 1:41:9 on the 2.7 mile circuit.

At this point in time he was leading all SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) drivers in points for the Class A Sports Car Championship.
