Sebring - 1962 & 1970

Steve first competed in the 12 Hour Race at Sebring in March of 1962. Co-Driving with Stirling Moss in a Le Mans Healey, they lead their class for the first 7 hours, but were forced out of the race by engine problems. His performance in this event led to an offer from the British Motoring Corporation to race professionally for them (which he turned down in favor of acting).

Peter Revson and Steve McQueen
Peter Revson and Steve McQueen Steve's most infamous race at Sebring however was in March of 1970, when racing with Co-Driver Peter Revson in a Porsche 908 Spyder, the pair came first in their class, and second overall (barely losing out to Mario Andretti in a larger more powerful Ferrari).

Most amazing of all was that Steve drove this race with his leg in a plaster cast (due to having broken his foot in six places just two weeks earlier in a motorbike crash at the Lake Elsinore Grand Prix). At the end of the race he emerged from the Porsche, hobbling in extraordinary pain, the cast having completely melted off his foot.
