Steve's first car
1. Santa Barbara (1959) |
Sebring - 1962 |
|
Steve competed in two races at Sebring in March of 1962 as part of the World Championship circuit. In Star on Wheels William F. Nolan quotes Steve: "I drove two cars that weekend in Florida," he said. "They had a kind of warm-up race there on Saturday, a three-hour production go in which all of us BMC drivers were put in Austin-Healey Sprites. I finished ninth in a field of two-dozen plus." The next day he competed in the Sebring 12 Hour Race. Co-Driving with John Colgate (of the toothpaste Colgates) in a Le Mans Healey, they lead their class for the first 7 hours, but were forced out of the race by engine problems. His performance in this event led to an offer from the British Motoring Corporation to race professionally for them (which he turned down in favor of acting). |
